He was well known and loved in the Charleston community and known to many as “Papaw.” He was a member of Charleston First Baptist Church and Charleston Masonic Lodge No. 484.
He retired from Bowater Southern Paper Corp. after 34 1/2 years of service and served in the United States Army during World War II.
He was born and raised in Franklinton, La., to the late John and Minnie Bell Jenkins Jones. He was also preceded in death by two sisters: Comaleitha King and Myra Jenkins; and two brothers: Ivan and Albert Jones.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Irene Talley Jones; one daughter, Rosemary Hayden of Knoxville; one son and daughter-in-law, Sidney and Norma Jones of Palm City, Fla.; three grandchildren: Kelie Hammond of Knoxville and Christopher and Matthew Jones, both of Palm City, Fla.; four great-grandchildren: Hayden, Noah, Leah, and Lauren Hammond, all of Knoxville; one sister, Josie Mae Robinson; and several nephews.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, in the chapel of Grissom Funeral Home with Pastor Harold Millsaps officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service.
