The Lady Bucks came out on top of the ensuing slugfest by a 14-6 final talley.
Motlow State jumped on top with a pair of runs in their first at bat of the day when Shelby Webb belted a two-run homer. Sydney Howell answered for the Lady Cougars in the bottom of the second with a solo home run to cut the 2-1 Motlow lead in half.
Ashley Williams and Kelli Bruning each knocked in a run for the visitors in the third, but the Lady Cougars exploded for a four spot in the bottom of the third to take their first lead of the day. Emily Huston and Sara O’Rear singled to start the rally and both crossed home on a single by Maura Ditto. Meghan Allen then dialed long distance for a two-run homer to give Cleveland State a 5-4 lead.
The Lady Cougars tacked on a run in the fourth when Amber Covington smashed a solo homer. But, it was all Lady Bucks after that as they pounded out five runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to finish the win in a big way. Morgan Frye singled in a run, Makenzie Hopkins doubled in two more and another pair crossed on Cleveland State miscues in the fourth.
Lauren Warren doubled in a run in the fifth while Williams doubled in two more and Tori Taylor and Bruning added an RBI each to the Motlow hit parade to end the game in five innings and take game one of the series in impressive fashion.
Lindsey Knoerr went the distance for Motlow State to get the win while Kelsey Capella took the loss for the Lady Cougars (6-13, 3-10) and Ida Watson pitched in relief.
The teams will try to get in a doubleheader this afternoon to finish the series.
