More than 525 athletes from 36 area high schools participated in the 2013 Optimist Southeastern Track and Field Invitational, which was hosted by Walker Valley.

“This year was the first year that we had minimum standards to qualify for the Optimist,” Walker Valley head coach Jasen Parks said. “I felt like that really upped the level of competition throughout the whole meet. Every race was really a good race; there were no bad races all night.”

Beginning at 4 p.m. and finishing up a little over five hours later, Parks felt that overall, the meet was a success on many levels.

“I think it went very well, which is attributed to a number of things,” Parks said. “We had some parents come in and help with timing and scoring and we had some Bryan College athletes come help with managing the athletes, getting them checked into their events and getting them to the start line, which allowed us to move very fast.”

Both Cleveland and Walker Valley girls and boys teams participated in the Optimist, with the Raiders finishing up in third place and the Mustangs finishing in 15th place. The Lady Raiders finished fourth, and the Lady Mustangs tied for 17th.

“Most of our kids had personal best times. We felt like the team is coming together great and starting to act and perform like a team instead of just a group of individuals,” Parks commented. “There’s some techniques and technical areas that we’re going to start working on and trying to fine tune before we get into the post season.”

Cleveland’s Queturah Abdullah-Muhammad led the way for the Lady Raiders, finishing first in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.44. She also first place in the long jump at 17-feet, 7-inches.

Recent Mars Hill signee Reeves Morgan placed third in the boys high jump, recording a jump of 6-feet, 2-inches. Morgan also placed seventh in the triple jump, recording a distance of 39-feet, 5-inches.

Walker Valley high jumper Mason McClure tied for ninth place with his 5-feet, 6-inch jump.

Lady Raider Marissa Langford was impressive in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01.52 landing her in second place. Langford also tied for fourth place in the high jump with a jump of 4-feet, 10-inches. Cleveland’s Mira Migovich came in seventh place in the long jump at 15-feet, 3-inches.

Atarah Abdullah-Muhammad, who has signed with Middle Tennessee, placed third in the triple jump with a total distance of 36-feet, 5-inches.

Walker Valley took first in the boys 100 meter dash thanks to Justin Ware’s time of 11.02.

In girls shotput Lady Raider Hallea McClendon came in seventh place with a throw of 32-feet, 5-inches, followed by Lady Mustang Rachel Lawhorn who threw 32-feet, 1.5-inches.

Raider Kevin Ha threw 118-feet, 6-inches in the discus event, which placed him seventh.

Cleveland’s boys relay teams finished strong at the Optimist, placing second in both the 4x200 and 4x800 meter relays with times of 1:32.95 and 8:35.27 respectively. They placed third in the 4x400 with a time of 3:37.36 and fourth in the 4x100 relay with a time of 44.07 seconds.

The Optimist serves as a preview as to what can be expected at the state competition.

“State is going to be a lot of fun. There are a lot of good athletes,” Parks said.
