Signal Centers will offer free developmental screenings at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 3405 Peerless Road N.W., on Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

What is a developmental screening?

It is a quick series of assessments that looks at how a child problem solves, moves, follows directions, talks and plays with friends.

What age children will be screened?

Any child aged birth to 5 years can have a developmental screening.

Why should I have my child screened?

This will help ensure your child is ready to learn and prepared for preschool and kindergarten as well as addressing any concerns you may have regarding any area of your child’s development.

Here is one family’s story:

Ethan’s mother contacted Signal Centers in July 2012 for a screening. The family had concerns about Ethan’s speech development, inability to separate from family members and not playing with friends. A developmental screening was quickly scheduled.

His mother brought him to the screening. Ethan was very upset during most of it, but we were able to get assessment results. The results indicated Ethan had delays in speech and language development, and at-risk behaviors in the other developmental areas of thinking, motor, and play skills.

We recommended a full-language evaluation take place and for Ethan to be enrolled in a quality early education setting with small class sizes in order to address his unique needs.

The family followed through with the recommendations, and Ethan began speech/language therapy in August 2012.

He made steady gains in participating in therapy and separating from his family.

In October 2012, the family enrolled Ethan in Signal Centers’ Parents Day Out for two days a week. Ethan cried the first couple of days, but quickly settled into the classroom routine. The family increased the days of attendance each week to four.

Now Ethan loves to come to school. He knows all of his friends’ and teachers’ names. He participates in classroom activities readily. But most importantly, Ethan is talking, a lot.
