The device is designed to increase student interaction and promote full-class participation.
The “Learner Response System,” purchased with the contribution, coordinates with the high-tech computerized equipment in each classroom and has increased student engagement.
Like a hand-held remote control or cellphone, the “clickers” enable each student to indicate or text answers to questions during classes or examinations.
Both teachers and students report an increase in learning and more effective teaching, directly related to the use of the new devices.
When the chemistry, biology and physics classrooms were visited by retired executive and BCPEF Trustee Ron Braam, he observed the technology in action. Impressed, he encouraged executive vice presidents Greg Gibson (Sales and Administration) and Kevin Hrebenar, (R&D/ Manufacturing) at Manufacturers Chemicals to match a previous purchase.
As a result, four of 10 classrooms are fully equipped with sets of the ActivExpression 2 devices. Gibson and Hrenbenar hope their action will stimulate contributions from other donors, equipping the remaining classrooms.
CHS science teachers Andi Wendorf and Alicia Lowe report since initiating use of the devices, they have observed an increase in student interaction and contribution to lessons. The results have included stimulating discussions and lively, insightful debates.
With gratitude, the two teachers also indicate they can more effectively manage their instruction. Feedback using the devices allows an instant gauge of student comprehension of the subject matter at hand.
The ability to identify student achievement trends and proactively address a lack of understanding reduces challenges before they become ongoing academic issues for their students. Self-paced learning and testing is also facilitated with the ActivExpression2 devices.
