He was born in Johnson City on April, 23, 1937, a son of the late William and Frances Cross.
He was of the Baptist faith and attended North Cleveland Baptist Church.
He worked locally for many years at Brown Stove Works, Hardwood Frames of America, and Cross Shavings. He also served in the U.S. Navy for four years on the USS Bryce Canyon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, William James Cross III.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 50 years, Wilma Cross; one daughter, Carrie Cross, extended daughter, Amy Pickering Hayes; one brother, Lynn Cross (Darlene) of Cleveland; one sister, Kay Cross of Portland, Maine; one niece, Brandi Burns (Terry); three nephews: Karl Keasler (Angelia), Zachary Cross (Jessica), and Patrick Cross; five aunts: Betty Morrow, Joyce Dantzler, Jean McDonald (Charles), Hazel Hughes and Mattie Cartwright (Elmer); two uncles: John Morrow (Mary), Haskel Morrow (Betty); and special friends: Dewayne and Judy Hooper and Pete and Phyllis Blackwell.
The family will receive friends on Thursday afternoon, May 23, 2013, from 1 to 3 p.m. at North Cleveland Baptist Church, 2815 North Ocoee St.
A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. with Dr. Jay McCluskey officiating.
A graveside service will take place immediately following the service at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Brandon McDonald, Zachary Cross, Alan Colloms, Bobby DeLay, Lee Glover, DeWayne Morrow.
