Rhonda Phillips’ second-grade class at Yates Primary School released painted lady butterflies that they had watched grow from tiny caterpillars into beautiful butterflies. They purchased the tiny caterpillars and watched daily as they changed into butterflies. The students saw how a caterpillar goes through complete metamorphosis and breaks out of its chrysalis in about one month.

Students wrote about the changes in their journals.

Gary Dyer, their custodian, explained how important it was to release them on the last day of school. He assisted the students and Phillips in the release of four painted lady butterflies.
