KIDZ ZONE, Creative Arts for kids ages 5-12, meets every Thursday at The Salvation Army, 437 Inman St. A meal is provided at 6 p.m., and the activities begin at 6:45 p.m. Kidz Zone is a Bible-based, hands-on, character building interactive program. Movies showing this week at the library are: “The Hideaways” (PG) on June 25 at 7 p.m. — this movie is based on the children’s book, “From the Mixed-Up Files of Basil E. Frankweiler” by E.L. Konigsberg; “Journey to the Center of the Earth” (PG) will be shown on June 26 during the Summer Movie and Games beginning at 2 p.m., with games available after the movie until 6 p.m.; and then as part of the Adult Summer Reading Program, “Groundbreaking Reads,” the History Channel’s documentary “Digging for the Truth: Hunt for the Lost Ark” will be shown at 4 p.m. in the Community Room.

The Chinese Class offered by the library will begin on July 23. It will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. and continues through Oct. 10. There is no fee for this class. Registration continues at the Non-fiction desk or by calling the library at 472-2163. The class will be taught by Wie Chen a former translator in Germany for Volkswagen.

A class in Japanese is offered this summer at the library each Monday and Wednesday through June and July. There will be two classes offered, at 10 or 11 a.m. The classes will be taught by Yumi Nomura, who was born in China but has been a Japanese citizen since she was 16. To register for this class, call the library at 472-2163, ext. 126. The classes will be limited in size and minimum age will be 16.

THE UNITED CLUB will meet Tuesday at Golden Corral at 11:30 a.m. Author Joyce Fox will be the special speaker. For information, call Martha Bostic at 479-9207.

an AARP Driver Safety Class will be given on June 26 and 27 by McMinn Senior Center for adults over 55 years. The class runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. This classroom program helps ensure older drivers remain safe behind the wheel. Refreshing the rules of the road in an informal setting among your peers keeps skills sharp. The Instructor is professionally qualified to present the program which could lead to a discount from your insurance company. Class fee for the eight-hour course is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers. To pre-register, call McMinn Senior Center at 423-745-6830.

Summer is almost here and for many kids that means it’s time for camp. The Salvation Army is preparing for its annual summer camp which benefits children from disadvantaged circumstances. Children ages 7-12 are eligible to go to The Salvation Army’s Division Camp located on beautiful Dale Hollow Lake. The fun-filled week will offer crafts, fishing, swimming, sports, songfests and campfires with a focus on learning about God’s love. Certified camp instructors supervise all swimming and waterfront activities and there is a nurse on duty at all times. For more information, call Gina Ballinger at 308-3467.
