The Fill-the-Boot campaign for Muscular Dystrophy Association is a 59-year American tradition that takes place in thousands of cities across the United States and Canada.
Cleveland Fire Department was the No. 1 firefighting agency in the state when it came to collections and ultimately the donation to MDA.
The money that has been collected over the past years during the Fill-The-Boot program has funded breakthrough research, clinics, summer camp, and medical equipment for thousands of kids and adults.
The collected funds go to the local district MDA chapter, and the money stays locally to help children and adults with neuromuscular diseases.
The Cleveland Professional Firefighters Local 3748 has supported this American tradition and members are dedicated to continuing their support to MDA until a cure is found.
In 2012 they were able to present a check to Holly Carroll, MDA area director, in the amount of $30,550. They are ranked first in the state and received the MDA State Golden Axe Award for their fundraising efforts.
This money was raised during their annual Fill-the-Boot Campaign and Golf Tournament. On behalf of Local 3748, Micah Akins, local president, thanked the community for the continued support during the campaign.
He also thanked the participants and sponsors of the 2012 golf tournament, especially Larry Hill Ford, Firehouse Subs and Tarver Distributing.
One day neuromuscular disorders will be among those diseases that have been conquered by the determination of scientific investigators and the generous support of the American public.
By assisting in these efforts, you are helping the association continue its rapid progress in search of effective treatments for neuromuscular disorders, a spokesman said. Until treatments are developed, he added, your generous support will also help people with neuromuscular diseases in this area through MDA’s comprehensive clinic services provided at the Vanderbilt Medical Center.
Cleveland Fire Chief Steve Haun also noted a number of firefighters participated in the “Day of ‘Change’” event which raised money for the Ronald McDonald House.
“We have participated the past three years, collecting change at each of Cleveland’s McDonald’s locations,” Haun said.
