Chair Lynn DeVault, vice chair Lou Patten and members Verrill Norwood, Mike McCoy and LeRoy Rymer Jr. voted not to make repairs to the lighting system at Hardwick since the proposed total shutdown date is approaching in October.
Night landing service at Hardwick has been discontinued.
DeVault said only operational landings will be conducted between daylight and dark and notice will be made to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The decision was made after review of the grounds revealed approximately 18 of the 36 runway lights were inoperable and a control board would have to be replaced or rebuilt.
A number of retroactive motions were reviewed and passed.
Airport Director Mark Fidler said traffic at the Jetport is increasing.
“We would like to see how many corporations are coming in,” said Rymer.
Officials have noticed 8 to 10 new arrivals use the facility per week.
Taylor Newman of the Cleveland Regional Jetport reported rental cars will also be available at the new facility.
Newman said several sizes of vehicles are being offered for those who land at the Jetport and need transportation around the area.
Newman reported that the first student-training solo flight was completed at the Jetport this week.
Discussion also turned to the construction of T-hangars which are in the process of being constructed as the transition from Hardwick continues.
Newman said, traffic at the Jetport “is slowly picking up. Aircraft that probably wouldn’t be able to use the other (Hardwick) airport, was mostly corporate and they would usually land at Chattanooga and drive up here,” Newman said.
As hangers are being constructed, tenants will shift to the new Jetport from the Hardwick site.
Attorney George McCoin, representing Jones requested the execution of a document allowing Jones to obtain a loan for the hanger.
Essentially, the document would allow the lender to have rights to access property in case of a loan default and protecting the lender interest, according to McCoin.
“This effectivly protects their(bank’s) interest?” asked DeVault.
McCoin answered, “yes.”
She also asked if this was a typical document the authority to expect to see in the future regarding lease and construction of hangars. McCoin said it was and Jetport Authority attorney John Kimball said, “These would be the usual documents” that would be associated with the request.
Kimball had prepared a resolution outlining the lease agreement. The request was passed by the authority.
The authority members also discussed landscape issues. Inside the fence at the jetport, grass is being mowed.
Fidler said there were some areas on the property that were “still rough.”
A wetlands area on the property is not to be maintained; however, along the Dry Valley Road leading up to the entry to the jetport, tall grass has not been mowed by the county.
Officials requested the grass to be cleaned off leading to the facility.
They attributed recent heavy rainfall to excess growth.
The next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 16.
