Johnny Clifton “Clif” Carter, 68, of the Short Creek Community near Riceville, a loving husband, father and papaw who will be greatly missed, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late J.H. “Hessie” Carter Jr. and Anna Ruth Womac Carter. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Ray Carter; and a brother-in-law, Bobby Rice.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam War, and was a member of Short Creek Baptist Church.

He was a horse sale auctioneer since 1978 and was an avid horse trader and farmer. He was big in horse showing and horse training in the Short Creek Community.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Jane Carter of Riceville; one daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Kelsey Swafford of Riceville; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeff “Frog” and Cecilia Carter of Englewood; six grandchildren: Dustin, Alli, Abbi, Jodi, Tristen and Josie; two brothers and two sisters-in-law: J.T. and Betty Carter of Riceville and Ricky D. Carter of Riceville and Carolyn Carter of Riceville; one sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Dean Howard of Decatur; brother-in-law, Lake Harden and his wife, Sharon, of Cleveland; sisters-in-law: Janice Murray and her husband, Gary, of Cleveland, Anita McLain and her husband, Tommy, of Cleveland, Faye Bolt of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2013, in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home in Athens with the Revs. Jimmy Lewis and Johnny Hope officiating.

The body will leave the funeral home at 2:30 p.m. Thursday to be taken to the Carter Horse Sale barn and will lie in repose until 4 p.m. At 4 p.m. he will be taken by a horse-drawn wagon with family and friends, followed by horseback riders, wagons, and vehicles for a burial at 5 p.m. in Short Creek Cemetery with full military honors.

Anyone wanting to ride horses or in a wagon, please arrive before 3:30 p.m. Everyone please come and join the family in taking Clif on “The Last Ride.”

Pallbearers will be Bobby Farmer, Eddie Armour, Randall Moore, Todd Grubb, David “Rastus” Green and Larry Womac. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons Dustin Carter and Tristen Boggess and four special lifelong friends: Bobby Farmer, Willis Sliger, Randall Moore and Ed Shaver.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
