Every year on the day after Labor Day since 1940, the Cleveland Rotary Club has sponsored the Junior Dairy Show for 4-H Dairy Club members and vocational agriculture students.

Rotarian and show coordinator Steve Crump said the civic club’s relationship with the show is the longest of any other in the state. Every year, men and women in professional careers — and with no connection to agriculture — exchange their power clothes for blue jeans and T-shirts.

“Anytime you can help kids and watch them do something they love and something that’s a huge part of our community, the history and heritage of our community, it’s a good thing and incredibly enjoyable. It’s a great thing to watch these kids come out and show what they do and show their animals,” he said. “It’s just fun to be a part of something that’s been going on in Cleveland for 74 years.”

Another Rotarian and attorney, Ginger Buchanan, grew up showing dairy cows for some of those 74 years and before her, her father and aunt participated.

“Back in the old days, the show was held around the Courthouse Square,” she said.

Buchanan showed cows from the time she was in the fourth grade until she graduated from high school. She remembers being fortunate enough to always have good cows and being successful.

“The numbers of dairies have decreased dramatically from the days when I showed,” she said. “When I showed, this barn would be completely full of animals. Now, half of the barn is a recycling center.”

And now, it’s her two daughters, Maggie, 13, and Mary Emily, 10, in the show ring.

The Buchanan family still live on a farm, but no longer operate a dairy farm, but through personal relationships with families who do still have dairy farms, they are able to lease cattle.

Dr. Don Robinson has been a Rotarian for 36 years and though he grew up around a farm, he has no personal connection to agriculture. But, he said he has a pretty good background in agriculture “for a city slicker.”

“We had a farm, but it wasn’t our primary place of residence,” he said. “I got enough of farm life to appreciate what it’s all about.”

His parents raised a few cows and pigs, put up their own hay and had a riding horse.

“We had a garden and I learned what an outdoor toilet was, but as far as day-to-day farm life, I haven’t really done that. My dad had a feed, seed and fertilizer store in Athens. I grew up in loading feed, seed and fertilizer and delivering those things to the dairies and farmers.”

All of his farm experience is in the past, but he still enjoys the annual dairy shows.

“These are salt of the earth people and we couldn’t do without them,” Robinson said. “They don’t get a lot of headlines, but they put our food on the table.”
