Nellie Katherine Smith, 79, of Etowah, passed away Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at her residence.
She was born in Bradley County and lived a long and beautiful life as a resident of Etowah.
She was devoted to her family as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was a member of Mount Olive A.M.E. Zion Church in Etowah, where she served on the usher board, the Ministries of Kindness, she was a class leader and was active with the Eastern Stars.
She was the family matron and the pillar for all, as she was highly regarded throughout the community. She was the strength of unity for her family, her home served as a gathering place (specifically every Sunday) where we fellowshipped in love with a family meal. She loved cooking and canning foods. Her joy was to spend time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Vertie Ewing; her husband, Edward Henry Smith (October 13, 1998); siblings: Nedith Beck, Geneva Gray, Lee Ellis Cleveland, Ralph Thompson, Edna Fern Brooks and Willie Smith.
Survivors include two daughters: Dana L. Sharp of Cleveland and Teresa G. Smith of Etowah; five sons: Clavon E. Smith, Neal D. Smith and Calvin L. (Sara) Smith, all of Etowah, Coker A. (Cynthia) Smith of Riceville and Marquis L. Smith of Harriman; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; her daughters-in-love: Minister Deborah Smith and Ethel Pendergrass; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
The body may be viewed Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, beginning at 9 a.m. The family will receive friends during visitation which will begin at 3 p.m to 7 p.m. at Patton Funeral Home Chapel, 265 Fair Street S.E., Cleveland.
The family will also receive friends Sunday, Sept. 8, from 3 until the 4 p.m. service time, at Mount Olive A.M.E. Zion Church, 133 County Road 812, Etowah. The Rev. Joe Moore will be the eulogist.
Interment will follow at New Zion Cemetery.
