CHATTANOOGA — For the second time in as many races, Bradley Central’s Harold Smith has left the cross country competition behind to bring home a first-place prize.
After outrunning 204 other runners at the season’s first Chattanooga Cross Country League race the previous week, Smith earned top honors at the 2013 PowerAde Meet in Chattanooga Saturday.
Smith completed the 5,000-meter race on the Moccasin Bend course in 16:35.03, beating Joe Bindner of Knoxville Catholic to the finish line by more than six seconds.
Two other Bears were a part of the 89-runner field, with Collin Gwaltney coming in 11th with a time of 18:03.31 and Joe Keller posted a time of 21:27.81 for 59th place.
While the Bradley runners ran unattached, Walker Valley earned 10th place in the team honors. Joseph Munoz led the Mustangs with a 41st place finish at 20:15.68, followed by Devin Pruett (21:38.63) in 52st, Mason McClure (21:45.46) in 53rd, John Hixon (21:45.67) in 54th and CJ McCullough (21:47.98) in 56th for a team score of 256.
Baylor (34), Farragut (45), Knox Catholic (111), Soddy-Daisy 121) and Ooltewah (135) were to the top five boys’ teams.
Knox Catholic's Annie Batcheller claimed the girls’ title with a time of 19:56, with Farragut (32), GPS (54), Catholic (81), Baylor (85) and Soddy-Daisy (147) claiming the top five team spots.
Whitney McConnell of Bradley was tops among local runners with a 24th place finish with a time of 23:21.33, while Bearette teammates Lena Fomeko (25:45.54) and Lindsey Armstrong (27:52.56) came in 42nd and 62nd, respectively.
Walker Valley had four unattached runners in the girls event — Kayla Sims (49th, 26:43.60), Rachel Tarver (51st, 26:59.32), Trinity Sellers (56th, 27:30.19) and Sierra Green (65th, 28:11.06).
All four local high school teams will participate in the CCL meet Tuesday at Camp Jordan Park in East Ridge.
