Making it to the highest level of high school competition, Heidi Barringer of Cleveland High and Walker Valley’s Kyle Limburg bounced back from tough opening rounds with solid outings in Wednesday’s final 18 holes at the WillowBrook Golf Club in Manchester.
Barringer, who struggled out of the gate with a 58 on the opening nine holes, rebounded to shoot a 3-over 39 after the turn Tuesday for a 97, tying her for 36th place in the 56-player field.
On Wednesday, the Lady Raider improved her overall score by 14 strokes as she carded an 83, moving up the leaderboard into a tie for 32nd place with Katelyn Witucki of Seymour.
Ooltewah senior Samantha Griffith had to settle for her second straight runner-up trophy at the state tournament after shooting even par on Wednesday for a 5-over 149 for the event.
Brighton freshman Aubree Jones fired an even-par opening round and chipped in for birdie on the final hole for a 4-over 76 to edge Griffith by a single stroke.
Limburg improved his score by seven strokes over Tuesday’s opener, firing an 83 to go along with his original 90, for a 173 total.
Also representing District 5-AAA in the event, Ooltewah senior Danny Gleeson shot a 77-81 — 158, while sophomore Logan Price of East Hamilton fired a 77-79 but was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.
Both Barringer and Limburg are juniors and were making their first appearance at a TSSAA state tournament, which will serve as motivation for a return trip next fall to wrap up their high school careers.
