Two groups in Cleveland have set out on a mission to help area residents find steady employment by hosting events to allow them to meet prospective employers.

A local nonprofit and a partnership between the local Chamber of Commerce and the Southeast Development District will provide residents with job fair events this month.

On Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., The Refuge will conduct a job fair at its 1075 Blythe Ave. location.

“Our main purpose is to create sustainability in families,” said Kelli Kyle, vice president and director of community involvement at The Refuge. “One way we do this is by helping them find jobs.”

Kyle said at least 20 different exhibitors are expected, including both employers and educational institutions. Even more could be added before Saturday, the deadline for any businesses wishing to take part.

The fair is free for everyone to attend, including the businesses.

She said those looking for jobs should show up prepared to meet future employers and possibly set up job interviews.

“We encourage people to bring their resumes, also,” Kyle said. “We can also help people create a resume; that’s what we do anyway.”

Any businesses interested in being part of the job fair can call 423-584-5211 or email

On Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce and the Cleveland Career & Workforce Development Office will hold a job fair at the Cleveland Family YMCA on Urbane Road.

Lovely Abraham, career services coordinator at the Cleveland Career & Workforce Development Office, said the fair’s organizers are expecting a crowd. Last year’s event drew 500 people to meet with about 50 representatives.

“We’re expecting that same amount this year,” she said.

The event is also free to the public. Abraham also said attendees should expect to be ready to apply for jobs. She added that, in some cases, businesses might want to do on-the-spot interviews.

No registrations or appointments are necessary to attend either event as a job seeker.
