The Tennessee Highway Patrol reported a 9-year-old girl was struck by an SUV as she crossed a busy roadway Sunday afternoon in Bradley County.
The girl had reportedly purchased an item from the One Stop gas station at the intersection of Spring Place Road and Hughes Lake Road before heading back her family’s residence. She was hit by an oncoming Jeep Cherokee when she crossed Spring Place, according to the THP. Injuries sustained in the collision included a broken leg, a bruised kidney and a scraped head.
Reports said the girl was airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, where she is in critical condition.
Officers reportedly used video footage provided by the convenience store to study the accident. The footage showed the girl looked both ways before letting a car go by. She only looked one way on her second check for traffic. The driver of the Jeep hit her as she stepped into traffic, reports said.
Ongoing investigations will reveal whether or not the driver was speeding at the time of contact.
