Taylors Family and Community Education Club met on Nov. 5 at the Taylors Ruritan Club. Hostesses were Swanola McKeehan and Retha Odom.

Oleta Ownby opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Secretary McKeehan called the roll, which was answered by the question, “If you had an extra $500 in 2013, what charity would you give it to and why?”

Plans were finalized for the Christmas Cottage. The Christmas party will be held at the new Jenkins Deli on Dec. 3.

The educational program on cranberry facts was presented by Kaye Smith, UT Extension agent.

She said one cup of cranberries has only 44 calories and 4.4 grams of fiber. It also contains Vitamins A and C, plus calcium. However, she added, one cup of cranberry sauce contains about 400 calories because of the sugar required to make cranberries palatable. Cranberry is the red cousin of the blueberry. Cranberries are an antioxidant, also, and have anti-adhesion qualities that help with ulcers and heart disease. Members were given recipes for a local cranberry salad and a fall fruit salad.

Other members and guests present were Judy Bowlin, Brenda Carder, Cathy Besing, Linda Brown, Doreen Johnson, Mary Bagley, Bennie Jenkins, June Parks, Vergie Toomey, Lorette Walker, Sherrie Duvall, Mary Ann Cornelius and Joan Bryson.
