The 10-foot-wide concrete path has been poured on about half of the project, with the remaining in gravel awaiting the forms and cement trucks to complete it to the end of a 7-acre tract.
My first foray down this area was about six years ago when a few members of the Greenway board took an afternoon hike through high weeds and brush from the Mohawk Drive bridge to Mapleton Drive. As we trekked along Mouse Creek we commented on the beauty of an area that no one can see because it has no public access.
Now, users of the Greenway will be able to add this scenic section to their regular routine. It will curve through majestic trees, right along Mouse Creek and will be lit with the same lampposts that adorn the Greenway for its current 3.94 miles. When completed, this new section will make the Greenway “officially” more than four miles long at around 4.2 miles.
One of the exciting aspects of this new addition will be the connectivity of residents on Village Green Drive who will now have direct access to the Greenway via a path at the end of the drive. If so inclined, Cleveland High School students in this area will be able to walk or ride bicycles to CHS without crossing a street. That’s over two miles! The same goes for those residents who might want to take a nice leisurely bike ride on the Greenway, park their bikes at Northway Plaza and grab a yogurt at Perkits or sandwich at Subway.
Here’s another benefit for those who own property on Village Green Drive: When this new section opens, property values will instantly go up. You can guarantee that real estate agents will mention “direct access to the Greenway” as a terrific selling point for potential buyers. This marketing has been proven in cities all across the country and it will be no different here. Ask anyone who lives within walking or biking distance of the Greenway and they will tell you the benefits outweigh any potential drawbacks.
One final aspect of the Mohawk Extension is the topographical change taking place at the trailhead entrance. The new connector sidewalk to the parking area is higher, eliminating the previous problem of puddles blocking the entrance for days after a rainfall. Because of a natural gas line crossing, the path of the Greenway needed to take a curve around it, thus creating an attractive area for future project development.
Earlier this year, employees of the Home Depot adopted a portion of the area and planted a bed of flowers and mulch. During construction, large rocks that peppered the bank of Mohawk were removed allowing for future landscaping. Although no final plan is in place, I am excited about the potential for the area to become an attractive starting point for Greenway users.
Weather permitting, the Mohawk Extension project will be completed before the end of the year. Thanks to the crew of the Public Works Department who are building the section right in the middle of leaf collection season!
