He was a graduate of Tyner High School and was a distinguished member of the 502nd Infantry regiment and lifetime member of the 101st Airborne Association.
He served his country in Vietnam, having received the Purple Heart, Vietnam service medal and the National defense service medal as well as several other commendations.
He was retired from the Norfolk Southern Corporation. He was an EMT, former member of the Hamilton County Rescue Squad, reserve officer with the Hamilton county Sheriff’s Office and was a volunteer firefighter with the Highway 58 VFD.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jeanie Lightfoot Stearns; children: Julia (Cameron) Smith of Louisville, Eric (Melanie) Stearns of Marietta, Ga., Brian (Samantha) Stearns of Georgetown, Jason Stearns and Ian (Melinda) Stearns of Harrison; grandchildren: Heather (Joel) Holley, Devin, Benjamin and Cooper Sack-Stearns, Branden Luzier, Gavin and Sabrina Smith, and his beloved companion, Angus; siblings: Harry, Rhonda and Vanessa; uncle, Leon and aunts, Lorene and Beuluah.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 this evening at the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home 313 Webb Road, Chattanooga TN.
