According to Detective Joe Price of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, Brittany Mitchell was identified as the person struck by the train, “just south of the York Road crossing.”
The incident occurred just before 11:30 a.m.
“Interviews with the engineer and conductor stated that they say saw her laying in the tracks,” Price said. As standard procedure, train operators reportedly had already begun blowing the engine’s horn and braking due to the approach at the York Road crossing, according to Price. “Investigation is still ongoing pending autopsy results,” Price said.
