The 23rd annual Tennessee Sandhill Crane Festival concludes today. The festival gives the public a chance to observe these large, yet graceful birds as they make the Hiwassee River their temporary home while migrating. This is the only weekend between Nov. 1 and March 1 the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency opens the gates to the Hiwassee Refuge. The Birchwood Community Center, just off Hwy. 60, is offering arts, crafts, speakers, music, kids’ activities and more between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. today. From there, the shuttle buses transport people to the refuge, as well as the Cherokee Memorial.
