On Jan. 18 and 19, the Cleveland Middle School Dance Team competed in the Athletic Championship Nationals at the Chattanooga Convention Center and won first place in junior pom, first place in junior high jazz and first place in junior high hip-hop.

They defeated Gresham Middle School of Knoxville; Overton County Middle School of Allons; Hunter Middle School of Ooltewah; and East Hamilton Junior High School of Ooltewah, for the wins.

Judges’ comments included "Great group work,” “High energy and crowd appeal — very fun to watch,” "Overall great job with great formations,” "Very entertaining routines,” "Nice turn combinations,” and "Overall great synchronization and rhythm!"

Kelly Owens, the CMS dance coach, stated, "This competition was huge and very competitive. It was especially difficult because you had to compete for two days. We practice every weekday from July until February, and I always tell the girls to just do what they know. When I saw comments like ‘nicely executed’ from such renowned judges, I knew they had succeeded in doing just that.”

Continued Owens, “We drill formation, dance technique, performance quality, and details over and over and over again. It pays off. I am very proud of my girls for always giving 200 percent and keeping up that high Raider standard set forth in our sports programs. They brought home banners and champions jackets, so they were thrilled."

On Saturday, Jan. 25, the talented CMS dancers traveled to Heritage High School for the Heritage High School Invitational Dance Competition in Ringgold, Ga. At this competition, the CMS Dance Team not only brought home first place in junior high jazz, first place in junior high hip-hop, and first place in junior high pom, but also won the coveted "Best Crowd Appeal Award.”

The CMS Dance Team Raiderettes defeated Lassiter Junior High School of Marietta, Ga.; Smiths Station Junior High of Smiths Station, Ala.; Heritage Middle School of Ringgold; and Hunter Middle School of Ooltewah for the junior high champion titles, and 16 middle schools and high schools for the specialty award.
