Polk County Historical and Genealogical Society President Marian Presswood was presented the Polk Chamber of Commerce’s Community Service award at the annual banquet Tuesday night at the Savannah Oaks Winery.

The award is to recognize a volunteer who provides a useful community service. Presswood’s volunteer work keeping the PCHGS genealogy library open, promoting heritage tourism, editing the society’s Quarterly Newsletter and the weekly heritage article for the Polk News garnered her the nomination by news editor Cheryl Buehler.

The surprised recipient, who is also the county historian, declared herself speechless, but managed to thank the Chamber for the award. She expressed her appreciation to Buehler and the News for providing the outlet to reach a great number of people with stories about the history of the county and its people.

She said, “I really appreciate the Polk News’ commitment to keeping alive the history of Polk County and our people, and for giving me the opportunity to share historical and genealogical information and pictures from our many resources at the library with news readers across the country.”
