JACKSON — Led by a strong pitching performance by Angie Hughes the Lee softball team opened up Gulf South Conference (GSC) play with a 3-1 victory over Union University on Saturday evening.

Hughes (3-2) delivered her second no-hitter of the season while striking out five in working the full seven innings. The sophomore did allow a run and 10 walks in the contest.

The Lady Flames jumped on the board in the first inning thanks to a two-run double by Ana Coscorrosa. The hard-hitting senior would respond again with a RBI double in the third inning to account for all of the Lee offense.

"Ana (Coscorrosa) hit the ball well again especially in the clutch." noted head coach Emily Russell. "We ran the bases well and Angie (Hughes) was solid again."

Lynn set the table for the Lady Flames as she reached base in all four plate appearances finishing 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a pair of walks. Meg Macias added two singles while Dominique Hannah doubled in four at bats.

"Amanda (Lynn) has been a real fire starter for us." said Russell. "We are starting to come together and were able to get some kids some swings in situations we wanted to work on so that was a good."

Moriah Bolhman would register the lone Lady Bulldog run in the bottom of the second with an RBI sacrfice bunt. Despite failing to record a hit Union left 10 runners on base in the contest.

Kelly Robey (3-2) was tagged with the loss giving up three runs on nine hits in seven innings of work for the home team. The junior struck out 12 but yielded eight free passes.

The victory moves Lee to 4-3 on the year and 1-0 in GSC play. The loss drops Union to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in conference.

"We had good energy and weren't affected by the weather." remarked Russell. The game was originally scheduled for a 3 p.m. doubleheader but rain pushed the start time back.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
