As construction wraps up at the SPCA of Bradley County shelter on Johnson Boulevard and the March 17 date when the organization takes over county animal control draws closer, Kevin Jones has been hired to fill the humane officer/volunteer coordinator position.

Currently a kennel attendant at Wally’s Friends spay/neuter clinic in Chattanooga, Jones was a volunteer at East Ridge Animal Services and also a volunteer firefighter with the Whitfield County Fire Department.

“I am very excited to join the SPCA of Bradley County and its no kill initiative,” Jones said.

The SPCA will begin providing animal control in Bradley County on March 17, when the county’s current contract with the city of Cleveland expires. A ribbon cutting, open house and other opening events will be scheduled throughout March and April. Dates and times will be announced in the next week.

More than $12,000 has been raised in the SPCA’s charter membership campaign, which has been extended through May 1.

Anyone who joins the SPCA at any membership level before May 1 will be recognized as a charter member.

Membership begins at the “Puppy Paws” level, which is for children younger than age 10 and is a $10 annual donation. There are membership categories for students, senior citizens and families — a category to fit every budget.

Anyone who joins the SPCA at a membership level of more than $500 during 2014 will be recognized as a founder.

The SPCA of Bradley County has several naming opportunities for donors at its shelter.

Anyone donating $1,000 or more can have a name displayed on one of the SPCA’s 20 kennels during 2014. This can include the donor’s name, and in honor/in memory recognition of the donor’s choosing, or the name of a business or organization of the donor’s choosing. Fourteen kennel naming opportunities are still available.

In addition to the kennel-naming opportunity, the following additional naming opportunities are available:

n Permanent naming of the shelter, $50,000 donation.

n Permanent naming of the Dog Care Center, $25,000 donation.

n Permanent naming of the Small Animal Center, $20,000.
