Lee falls to West Bama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The Lee University tennis teams lost a Gulf South Conference match for the first time this season Friday at the University of West Alabama.

The Lady Flames fell by a score of 7-2, while the Flames lost 9-0.

In the women's match, West Alabama (9-2, 2-2 GSC) swept the doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead. Tonya McGraner and Maclain Yowarsky lost 8-3 to Natalia Cardenas and Stanzi Stuijt. Jodie Rice and Krista Good fell by the same score to Christina Bettag and Shannon McEvoy. Kelsey Lovingood and Annie Sandberg were beaten by Dasha Popova and Sandra Florez, 8-2.

The Lady Flames (2-3, 2-1 GSC) won the No. 1 and No. 6 singles matches but lost the middle four. McGraner earned a little revenge on Cardenas at No. 1 singles. McGraner held on for a 7-6 win in the opening set before losing the second, 6-0. McGraner would earn the win with a 6-2 margin in the third set. Morgan Friedlander defeated Kathryn Adams in straight sets to claim the win at No. 6 singles, 6-4 and 6-2.

No. 23 West Alabama (10-1, 2-1 GSC) swept the doubles portion of the men's match to take the early 3-0 lead. Richard Gamble and Daniel Hardesty lost 8-3 to Nestor Vargas and Kike Ruiz.

Alberto Calle and Westley Lemke fell 8-2 to Adam Drysdale and Anton Ivanov at No. 2 doubles. Kevin Tan and Vincent Audy lost by the same score to Simon Bardell and Manuel Grossmann.

The Flames (1-3, 1-1 GSC) lost all six singles matches in straight sets. Gamble attained the closest scores at 6-2, 6-3 to Vargas. Audy was beaten by Ruiz 6-1, 6-4. Lemke won four games from Grossman. Hardesty recorded two game wins against Drysdale, and Calle garnered one game against Ivanov.

The two squads remain on the road to face the University of North Alabama Saturday morning. The GSC match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
