CHATTANOOGA — Although he was a three-year football starter at Soddy-Daisy before transferring to Bradley Central, Brett Standifer hadn’t played baseball since his freshman season.

The former Trojan and Bears quarterback took the mound for his first varsity start Tuesday evening and fired a complete-game three hitter to hand Bradley its first win of the season.

“Brett did everything for us tonight — he drove the bus, bought the postgame meal and got us the victory,” joked Bear head coach Travis Adams after the 2-1 victory over East Hamilton. “He pitched a heck of a game.”

Splitting the season-opening District 5-AAA home-and-home series with the Hurricanes, Bradley will now turn its attention to the 2014 Richard Edwards Memorial Playing for a Cure Tournament.

The Bears will travel to Athens Thursday for a 2:30 p.m. game against Stone Memorial, before playing CAK at 5 Friday evening back at McMinn County High School.

Bradley will host a trio of games Saturday evening for the event, playing Alcoa at 4:30 and Meigs County at 7. Alcoa and Meigs will play each other at 2.

Standifer, who has signed to play football at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Ala., had pitched a little in relief on the Soddy-Daisy freshman squad three years ago, but made the most of his of his first Bear opportunity Tuesday.

The big 6-foot-2, 215-pound right hander didn’t give up a hit until a Hurricane batter laid down a perfect bunt and beat the throw to first for an infield hit with one out in the sixth inning.

He did give up a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh inning that was followed by back-to-back singles for the lone East Hamilton run on the night before shutting the door for the victory.

Altogether, Standifer struck out three and walked four in the complete-game effort.

Bradley (1-1, 1-1 District 5-AAA), which lost to East Hamilton (1-1, 1-1) 7-6 in eight innings Monday evening, scored solo runs in the fifth and sixth frames to claim the payback win.

In the fifth, senior Jacob Barnes reached on a one-out error. After walks to Standifer and senior Hunter Rogers loaded the bases, sophomore Kylar Lynn lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Barnes.

In the sixth, senior Chandler Duggan stroked a single, then advanced on three wild pitches to score what turned out to be the game-winning run.

Senior Logan Blackwell led the eight-hit Bear attack, going 3-for-4 at the plate.

Lynn, getting a chance to start behind the dish, roped a double and drove in a run in three at bats.

Junior Austin Calfee, Rogers, Standifer and Duggan each had a hit in the victory.
