Things got off to a different start Tuesday night though, as the Mustangs opened their season with a 6-0 defeat of Grace Baptist Academy.
“This was a good opener for us,” Walker Valley head coach Tom Bayliss stated. “We were able to apply the tactics and ideas that we’ve been working on during training. We possessed the ball very well, stringing together as many as 12 passes.”
The Mustangs got off to a quick start and were up 2-0 at the half thanks to goals by sophomores Jolen West and Blayne Carroll.
Freshman Sam Gibson got Walker Valley’s fourth goal of the game at around the midpoint of the second half.
Carroll got another goal past the Grace keeper about five minutes later.
Gibson’s second goal of the game followed shortly after, putting the Mustangs up 5-0.
Before the game was over, West was able to get his second goal of the game into the net, giving Walker Valley a 6-0 victory.
Noah Robinson, Jake Poulakis, Gibson, West and Carroll each got one assist in the match.
After his team’s win, Coach Bayliss was pleased with what he saw from all areas of the Mustang’s play.
“Three players scored twice, which is always good. The defense, along with freshman goalkeeper Skyler Swafford, kept a clean sheet,” Bayliss declared.
Walker Valley will be participating in the sixth annual Cleveland Classic tournament this Friday and Saturday.
The Mustangs take on Sullivan South Friday at the Cleveland Soccer Complex at 8:30 p.m.
On Saturday they host Coffee County at 11 a.m., then travel to Cleveland Middle School to take on Blackman at 7:30 p.m.
