ATHENS — Polk County was all knotted up with Class AAA Cumberland County going into the final inning late Friday evening, but then the bottom fell out.

“Carter Flowers had struck out 13, and it was 3-3 after the sixth inning, but the pitch count caught up with him and we had to pull him,” explained Wildcat head coach John Dixon. “They [Cumberland] scored five runs in the seventh to beat us.”

The Jets claimed an 8-3 victory in the 2014 Richard Edwards Memorial Playing for a Cure Tournament, which continued Saturday with the Wildcats facing Heritage and Rhea County at McMinn Central.

Polk County’s Trevor Peels blasted a two-run homer in Friday night’s battle with the Cumberland County squad, which has won three of its first four games this season.
