Little Katie Barkley, the 2-year-old who was in an accident in February, and her mother Katelynn were flown by Air Ambulance to a rehabilitation facility in Baltimore on Tuesday. The rehab center was chosen over the ones in New Jersey because of the specialized care Katie needs and which the Baltimore facility was able to provide. Katie will be at the facility three months.

According to Katelynn Barkley, Katie’s mother, it has been determined that, although Katie’s brain was injured, it does not have a blood clot, but motor functions are slow. She does not respond to voice commands, but does respond to sound and objects.

Although doctors warn that movements may be a reflex action, her mother said she is encouraged by the increased leg and arm movements and also, that Katie “is giving kisses.”

Mrs. Barkley’s shattered heel is slowly healing, but according to her doctors, she will always have pain. She has shed her cast and is wearing a boot, but can’t stand or walk for two months, after which, she will be in therapy to enable her to walk again. She was told that even in the future, she won’t be able to work unless it’s a sitting-down job.

The family has found a house with the required square footage on one floor with a bedroom for Katie which will accommodate the equipment she will need when she leaves rehab. It’s in a good neighborhood with a long drive so the around-the-clock nursing attendants can have good access.

But, Mrs. Barkley says, now the question is “How are we going to pay for it?”
