James Edward “Ed” Barrett passed away peacefully on Monday, March 17, 2014.

He was born on Sept. 23, 1931, in Chattanooga. He moved to Cleveland in 1963 and then to Sarasota, Fla., in 1982.

He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

Survivers include his children: Renee Sherk and husband, Rick, of Cleveland, Denise Yeager and husband, Randy, of Sarasota, Cherie Barrett of Sarasota and James Edward Barrett Jr. “Jeb” and wife, Karen, of Chattanooga; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He graduated from Orlando High School and shortly thereafter joined the U.S. Air Force. When he returned from the service he married Marilyn Earley and had four children. He went on to become an entrepreneur and businessman, doing everything from selling sewing machines, owning automobile dealerships and owning several other successful businesses until his passing.

He was also a Scout leader. He was a Christian Mason and Shriner. He loved the Miami Dolphins. He loved his immediate family along with a “family of friends.” If you knew him, you had a story to tell or an experience to share.

He will be laid to rest at Sarasota Memorial National Cemetery with military honors.

The visitation will be held Thursday March, 20, 2014, at Jennings Funeral Home, 5750 Swift Road, Sarasota FL 34231 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m,. with gravesite services following at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
