Upland Design Group architect Brian Templeton outlined the project schedule for the new Cleveland High gymnasium at a school board site committee meeting Wednesday morning.
Templeton separated the project into two phases.
Phase one began today with a coordination meeting between Cleveland High administrators, Cleveland Utilities and system administrators.
The next step will consist of construction documents, pre-bid project site visits by bidders and the opening of the bids mid-April.
The Cleveland Board of Education will decide which bid to select at the regularly scheduled May 5 board meeting.
Starting May 12, the chosen contractor will have 75 days to complete the demolition and utilities work. The last day of school is May 23. Principal Autumn O’Bryan expressed concern for student safety.
Templeton said the contractor’s instruction documents will dictate no work is to be done on site until school is out for the summer.
“We want to get them under contract as quick as we can,” Templeton said. “There are pieces of equipment that have to be relocated. ... We need to be able to get them under contract and turn them loose to go ahead and get that en route.”
The demolition process will take roughly 30 days to finish. The additional days are built in for utilities work and miscellaneous tasks.
Site chair Dr. Murl Dirksen asked whether local businesses will be involved in the first phase of construction.
Templeton said local contractors will be utilized for tasks to address mechanical and plumbing needs.
Board members, O’Bryan and Director of Schools Dr. Martin Ringstaff expressed interest in saving bricks, portions of the wooden gymnasium floor and seating to sale to those interested in having a piece of the Dome.
Added O’Bryan, “We would like to give them a little piece of history.”
Money raised through the memorabilia sales can be used toward items the school board will have to purchase for the gymnasium.
A portion of the exterior lobby wall connected to the Dome will remain standing throughout the demolition process. Templeton said the area will be isolated from the demolition and clad with waterproofing materials.
The target day for completion of the first phase is July 25
Discussions centered on the second phase will continue throughout the first half of the project.
“We will continue to have conversations and, as time allows, develop the design,” Templeton said. “What we have targeted is being able to present schematic designs at the school board meeting in May.”
Progress updates will be presented to the board at both regularly scheduled meetings in June and July. Bids for the second phase of the project will open near the end of August. Board members will determine which bid to award at the September board meeting.
Construction on the new gymnasium will begin in early September. The suggested start date for the 15-month construction is Sept. 8. Templeton said the projected completion date is Dec. 1, 2015.
Site committee members agreed to recommend the installation of 10 rows of bleachers from the Dome into the volleyball gym at the regularly scheduled school board meeting in April. The total cost will be $28,600.
