Margaret “Betty” Wilson Smitherman Darwin, 71, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014.

She was born in Montgomery, Ala. on Sept. 22, 1942, a daughter of the late Thurman and Francis Wilson.

She was a graduate of Auburn University where she was a member of Phi Mu sorority. While living in Palos Verdes, Calif., she was a member of the Junior League. She has made Cleveland her home since 1983. She was of the Methodist faith and a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, M.C. Smitherman Jr.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband of more than 22 years, Gordon Darwin; one son, Mack Culton “Chip” Smitherman III; one daughter, Elizabeth Smitherman McBrayer; three grandsons: Culton McBrayer, Alec McBrayer and Conner McBrayer; one granddaughter, Caroline Darwin of Knoxville; stepson and his wife, Robert and Lorraine Darwin; three sisters: Frankie Faxon (Charles) of Fairfax, Va., Carol Estes (Bert) of Montgomery and Ann Brown (Ed) of Big Canoe, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews, several other extended family members, church family and a host of special friends.

A celebration of her life will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2014, in the sanctuary of Broad Street United Methodist Church, 155 Central Avenue in Cleveland with the Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 p.m. until the 4 p.m. service time in the church narthex.
