CHATTANOOGA — The struggles at the plate continued for Walker Valley Monday afternoon in a District 5-AAA baseball matchup against East Hamilton.

The Mustangs put leather to metal on several trips to the plate, but came away with only five hits against the Hurricanes in a 3-0 loss.

Zach Wilcox took the win for the Mustangs, giving up two earned runs on seven Hurricanes hits. Wilcox struck out five East Hamilton batters and did not walk anyone.

Adding to the Walker Valley woes was the perpetuation of mistakes in the field that helped doom the Mustangs on a sunny afternoon on the campus of Chattanooga State.

"We just had five hits, you only get five hits and make four errors that's not a good recipe for winning against anybody, usually. We did put the bat on the ball some but when things are going like they are it seems like they are right at somebody until something gets you out of it," Mustangs coach Joe Shamblin said about the lack of run support and shoddy defensive play.

"Zach did a really good job for us on the mound. They had seven hits but two of their runs were unearned."

The Mustangs will get a chance to split the series with the Hurricanes this afternoon at Walker Valley. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

East Hamilton scored a single run in the bottom of the first and added another in the second after an errant throw to second put a runner in scoring position with two outs. Wilcox battled the ’Canes to a draw in the third and fourth before another Walker Valley error made it a 3-0 game.

Tucker Mendenhall cracked a two-out triple down the right-field line for the Mustangs in the top of the third, but was left stranded on a ground ball third out.

Walker Valley left six runners on base and had Mustangs on third twice, but could not push a run across.

Shamblin said he is hoping Walker Valley will finally get the bats going at the Pinewood Prep tournament this week in Summerville, S.C.

"I was ready for them (hits) to start falling about two weeks ago,” said Shamblin. "We've got to do the little things. We're just not doing the little things right and that's hurting us."
