SODDY-DAISY — The unusual spring snowfall wasn’t the only crazy thing going on Tuesday night in Soddy-Daisy as Bradley Central committed four errors and handed out nine free passes to give the host Trojans a key District 5-AAA victory.

After a snow squall put an end to the junior varsity game after just five innings, Bear miscues led directly to all of Soddy’s runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh, in the 4-3 varsity contest.

“Too many walks (nine). Too many errors (four). Too many missed opportunities (six runners left on base),” proclaimed Bradley head coach Travis Adams after the game.

Coming into league play this week, Bradley (7-4, 4-2 District 5-AAA) and Soddy (8-4, 4-2) were tied atop the district standings, but by splitting the home-and-home series they are now a game behind Ooltewah (6-4, 3-1) in the loss column. The Owls completed a sweep of McMinn County with a 10-0 win Tuesday in Ooltewah.

The Bears, who won Monday’s game at the McKenzie Baseball Complex by an 8-1 tally, will now travel to Murfreesboro for the Riverdale Warrior Classic.

Bradley will take on Jackson Christian School Thursday at 4:30 at Middle Tennessee Christian School. The Bears will play in Smyrna Friday, facing Sparkman (Ala.) at 5:30 and the host Bulldogs at 8. On Saturday, Bradley will play at Mount Juliet at 11 a.m.

With a game-time temperature of 39 and a wind-chill factor much colder on top of the big hill behind Soddy-Daisy High School Monday evening, the Bear offense was stymied until the final frame.

The Trojans, who only had three hits in the contest, put a couple of runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning. After the leadoff batter reached on an error, a pair of walks and a throw-away error on a suicide squeeze bunt allowed the game’s first two runs to cross home plate.

The hosts tacked on their only earned run of the night in the fifth, when a base runner who had a leadoff single got a little help from a walk and a hit batsman before scoring on a fielder’s choice grounder.

Blowing the save opportunity, Andy Wright “vultured” the pitching victory for the Trojans, despite facing eight batters in his only inning of work — striking out two, walking one, beaning another and allowing three hits — as the Bears scored all three of their runs with two out in the top of the seventh to even the score.

Junior Austin Calfee drew a pinch-hit walk to start the Bradley rally and senior Chandler Duggan moved him up with a single. Senior Baylor Terrell, who went 2-for-4 on the night, loaded the sacks with a two-out hit.

Senior Jacob Barnes, who went 2-for-3 at the dish, “took one for the team” to plate the first Bradley run, before classmate Brett Standifer beat out an infield hit to drive in another and the Trojans’ lone error of the game allowed the score to be knotted at 3-all.

However, in the bottom of the frame, a leadoff walk to Caden Ricketts and back-to-back Bear errors on bunt attempts, allowed the winning run to score.

Before the snowfall became strong enough to halt the game, Bradley sophomore pitchers Charlie Hammonds and Austin Lewis fired a combined no-hitter at the host JV squad for a 4-0 victory.

Sophomore Kylar Lynn roped an RBI-double in the contest, while freshman Byron Mantooth, sophomore Brandon Thompson and Calfee each added a hit for the victors.
