Bradley County Sheriff’s Office officials announced Chief Deputy Wayne Bird died early this morning.

Bird was placed on medical leave on March 14. His family recently stated he was under the care of hospice, and his condition was terminal. He and his wife, Colleen, traveled to see his children and grandchildren prior to his death.

Sheriff Jim Ruth expressed his condolences to the family. Bird’s wife, daughter Tish and sons Sterling and Richard were by his side when he passed away.

A press release sent out by the Sheriff’s Office stated Bird will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the men and women of the BCSO.

“He brought a great deal of experience and expertise to the Sheriff’s Office,” Ruth said. “We in Bradley County owe a great deal of gratitude to him for the professional and moral leadership that he brought to his position of chief deputy.”

Funeral arrangements are pending.
