CALHOUN — BECU member Robert Sherwood has won $1,000 from BECU to his favorite nonprofit, Bowater Goodfellows.

BECU has asked its members to nominate their favorite nonprofit helping people in the counties eligible for BECU membership: Bradley, McMinn, Meigs, Monroe, and Polk. Bowater Goodfellows is the first winner of 2014.

The mission of Goodfellows is to act as an avenue for charitable donations to the surrounding communities and counties. Funds are donated from employees of Resolute Forest Products and are used to help people in need throughout the five-county area, as well as provide financial assistance to fellow employees who have been absent for an extended period due to illness.

Their biggest activity each year is preparing Christmas baskets that contain food, toys, and coats for needy families.

Sherwood describes one occasion where Christmas baskets were being handed out in 17-degree weather and a young girl got out of a car shivering.

“When asked where her coat was she replied, ‘I don’t have one.’ When she and her family left she was wearing a coat with a toboggan (stocking cap),” wrote Sherwood, “and had a big smile on her face. ... These heart-warming events are routine and serve to motivate even the most tired of the staff to keep going.”

To make your own donation to support Goodfellows, mail Rodney Urban at P.O. Box 377, Calhoun, TN 37309.

The Pay It Forward program will continue through 2014, and that means any member of BECU can nominate their favorite nonprofit for a $1,000 Pay It Forward prize. Four more prizes will be given out in 2014, and the deadline to be considered for the second prize is May 31.

BECU began the Pay It Forward program in 2010 as a way to give back to the community it serves. Since the program’s inception, BECU has given $19,000 to various charities making a difference in our community. For more information, visit www.bowaterecu.org and look under the “News & Info” tab.
