The Bradley County Commission authorized a resolution Monday allowing County Mayor D. Gary Davis to enter into a lease agreement with Waterville Baptist Church for one year allowing the church the use of some county property.
Waterville Baptist, which legally operates as a religious nonprofit corporation, made an offer to the county to lease the county’s property consisting of a field behind the firehall located at 3715 Dalton Pike. It is more commonly known as the former Waterville School property.
“It is not a field we use in our program, except to practice on; we have leased it out a hundred times over those years, short term,” Davis said.
The lease for the property will be for a yearlong period at a rate of $5 per year. It is not decided whether this lease will run over into the next year, because the church may not have the need for the property after the original lease expires.
The church has agreed as part of the terms of the lease to provide all maintenance and upkeep for the property during the lease term.
“The south end of town is doing ‘Upward’ type soccer and basketball programs. We have access to play soccer on the north end, we have the empty field. If you are a county resident or student resident, we will have a soccer program or the like. It is great,” said 5th District Commissioner Jeff Yarber.
