ENGLEWOOD — Walker Valley struggled to find hits against Alcoa in a Friday afternoon doubleheader at McMinn Central High School. The Mustangs reached base only three times in a 1-0 loss to the Tornadoes before venting pent up frustration in a 10-0 walloping of the host Chargers.

Alcoa scored the only run it needed in the bottom of the second after a throw to second in an effort to try and stop a stolen base attempt allowed a run to score from third.

Ben Clark got the win for Walker Valley in the closer with three innings of work. The Mustangs’ sophomore hurler gave up three hits to McMinn Central fanning four batters in 47 pitches while giving up no walks.

Walker Valley junior Zach Wilcox took over for two innings to close out the day for the Mustangs. Wilcox allowed two hits and fanned two while giving up a single walk.

“Our pitching did really well all day. To give up one run in two games, you would expect to win both of them,” said Mustangs coach Joe Shamblin. “I was proud of our pitching.”

Clark got the ball rolling for the Walker Valley offensively against Central with a double to lead off the top of the second inning. He scored on a two-out single by Tucker Mendenhall.

The Mustangs made it 3-0 in the third on back-to-back singles by John Simmons and Dillan Church. Clark picked up his second hit of the game with an RBI single and the Chargers helped out with an error.

Mendehall started off the top of the fourth for the Mustangs with a lead-off walk. He made it 5-0 when Elijah West tripled with one out. West scored the second run of the inning on a fielder's choice.

Walker Valley exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth to put a cap on the afternoon.

The first four Mustangs hitters alternated between doubled and singles to lead the charge. Stu Clark led off with a double followed by a Grayson Rountree single. Brian Oliver followed with another two bagger and Trae Carlton added the second single of the inning. Simmons added a third double of the innings for the Mustangs to make it a 10-0 game.

“Pretty much down the lineup most everybody got a hit. Most everybody had a hit and that was good,” said Shamblin.

Simmons closed out his day at the plate with a three-hit, three-RBI effort against the Chargers. Mendenhall was 2-3 with an RBI. Ben Clark was a perfect 2-2 with a pair of runs batted in. Carlton and Rountree also had RBIs for the Mustangs.

“I haven't felt good like that this much this year,” Shamblins reflecting on the tough year for the Mustangs. It was good to get a good win. And it was against my former school, it's always good to get a win in that fashion against McMinn Central.

“Hopefully, we are getting our act together right here before tournament time.”
