For six full innings Wednesday evening, a young Cleveland team was able to keep things close with Soddy-Daisy, which is tied with East Hamilton for first place in District 5-AAA.

The close game came off the rails in the top of the seventh inning though, as the Lady Trojans’ (27-6, 9-2) heavy hitters were able to drive in four more runs, which gave them a 6-0 win over the Lady Raiders (2-16, 0-11).

Despite displaying impressive defensive action through about 90 percent of the game, Cleveland’s lackluster offense was their ultimate downfall.

“We didn’t get the bats going. Defense was there, but we’re having trouble putting two and two together,” Lady Raider head coach Connie Stobert said. “We did get a couple of runners on base in the beginning, but again we didn’t execute and made some baserunning mistakes. That hurt us, especially in what was a close game.”

The Lady Trojans were held scoreless by the Lady Raiders for the first two innings, but with two outs already on the board, were able to bring a runner in off of a single from Haley Reynolds in the top of the first.

The following two innings carried on much like the first two, until an error by Cleveland in the sixth gave Soddy-Daisy the opportunity to put another run on the board.

Unfortunately for the Lady Raiders, the co-district leader was finally able to get the hits needed to add four more runs to their total.

With runners on second and third and no outs, a line drive by Reynolds which clipped an umpire in the face brought a Lady Trojan home.

After the next Soddy batter’s pop-up was caught, Savannah Moore’s single resulted in another RBI.

With two outs, Jessica Boles stepped up to the plate and knocked a double, which drove in the final two runners of the game.

Lady Trojan pitcher Shonna Penney recorded a no-hitter Wednesday evening.

“They need to be more aggressive and attack the ball. I keep trying to encourage them to be hungry and to be more aggressive at bat,” Stobert remarked.

Cleveland is hosting the District 5-AAA softball tournament this season, which begins on May 2.

Before the Lady Raiders can turn their focus towards the postseason though, they will have to travel to Athens today for their final district game against the Lady Cherokees.

The last regular season game is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
