A Florida resident with ties to Cleveland was reportedly the third person to die from injuries in a multicar pileup on Interstate 75 in Ocala, Fla., Saturday.

George R. Phillips, 55, of Ocala, was the brother of Eric Phillips, athletic director at Cleveland High School.

According to Ocala area media reports, George Phillips suffered injuries after he and Florida Highway Patrol trooper Chelsea Renee Richard, 30, and tow truck driver John Duggan aided at the scene of a crash.

Both Duggan and Richard died at the scene Saturday.

Phillips’ daughter had reportedly been involved in a crash and he and his wife had traveled to the scene.

The trooper and Phillips were waiting on Duggan to remove the damaged vehicle. They were standing off the roadway in a grassy area when a pickup truck and trailer ran into them. Phillips was taken to a hospital, where he reportedly died later Saturday evening.

Autumn O’Brien, principal at CHS, said a memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m., at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church in Ocala.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Eric, Silvia, Chris and Samantha,” she said of the coach’s immediate family.

According to the reports, FHP is continuing their investigation and possible charges are forthcoming.
