On an absolutely picture-perfect day for golf, the foursome of Dustin Gill and Andy, Jack and Steve Williams fired a sizzling 18-under par 54 to win the Annual Stanley Butler Shootout at Chatata Valley Golf Club on Wednesday afternoon.
The team of Tom Maupin, Al Miller, Jeff Davis and Mike Usery finished in second place with a 57 and won a scorecard playoff over the third place team from Landmark Insurance Group of Jeff Holden, Billy Thacker, Jordy Waller and Clint Taylor who also shot a 57.
The ninth and 10th place finishers were also recognized. Gene Rice, John Hail, Jerry McGaha and Chase Montgomery finished with a 62 and won a scorecard playoff over the 10th place team of Kay McDaniel, Gary Riggins, George Nerron and Zack Riggins who also ended play at 10-under par.
Overall, 24 teams participated in the annual event to help support Lee University Athletics.
“Wow, what a great day it was for Lee Athletics. It’s awesome to have so many of our awesome supporters gathered in one place, and enjoy time together on the course,” said John Maupin, Lee’s head golf coach. “We couldn’t have asked for a better day.”
Prizes were also given away for closest to the pin and the longest drive. Chris Gates took the closest to the pin prize on the 162-yard second hole while Eric Weekley stuffed it the closest on No. 14 (164 yards). Clay Hill flexed his muscles on the Par-5 sixth hole to win the longest drive competition.
“I am always impressed by how well supported Lee University and our athletic department is. It says a lot about the history and future here when you have so many people willing to be involved,” added Maupin. “I am already looking forward to another great tournament next year.
“I want to thank all of the volunteers we had today, and all those who helped make it happen, particularly our sponsors. It wouldn’t have been possible without them.”
