Jerry Ray Garland, 64, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 17, 2014, in a Chattanooga hospital.
He was born on Nov. 28, 1949, in Coker Creek.
He was retired from Whirlpool after 43 years. He served in the United States Army. He was a member of the Nine Pins Bowling Team at Whirlpool. He was a member of Galilee Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Bill and Inez Garland; maternal grandparents, John and Rebecca Debity; parents, Arvil and Vernell Garland; brothers: Ricky and Eddie Bill Garland; grandson, Jaxon Arvil Ray Chadwick; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, J.L. and Elizabeth Fritts.
He is survived by the love of his life, Debbie Fritts Garland; his two daughters: Melanie Evans and her husband, Darrell, and Amy Chadwick and her husband, Kevin “Moocher” Chadwick; grandchildren: Misty Fallin and her husband, Alex, Amber Jones, and Jonathan Jones, and his best buddy ever, Grayson Chadwick; brothers: Freddie Garland (Helen) and Eddie Garland (Ann); sisters: Ersa Massingill and Eva Carden (Horace); several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
He always had a smile on his face. He loved helping others. He would give the shirt off his back to a stranger in need. He was a friend to everyone he met. His life was a witness of what it means to be a true Christian. As he did while he lived, he gave freely after as an organ donor. His church and friends were very important to him. He leaves behind his best friends: Allen Bullard, Kenny “Chief” Thomas, Dave Jeffers, Willis Myers (Pooh Bear), Terry “Cotton” Myers, Ernie Evans and Steve “Roho” Farrar. He loved his family more than anything in this world.
A celebration of life service will be held in Jerry’s memory at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at Galilee Baptist Church, 665 Old Chattanooga Pike, Cleveland, 37311.
Interment will follow the service at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens with full military honors. Shane Garland, Eric Carden, Michael Fannin, Chase Fannin, Justin Patterson and Eddie “Pud” Garland serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the church from 4:30 to 9 p.m. today and on Wednesday from 11 a.m until the service at 2 p.m.
