The kickoff luncheon will be hosted by Whirlpool Corporation at the company’s Benton Pike plant from noon to 1 p.m. Tickets to the kickoff luncheon are $12.50 per ticket, or $50 for a half-table (four seats). Corporate tables with eight seats are available for $80, and reservations are necessary so officials can prepare for the event.
Those wishing to attend the luncheon should RSVP to the United Way offices by Monday, June 30, either by phone at 423-479-2020 or by email to Cathy Quintard at email@example.com.
Many of those in attendance at the luncheon will participate in the “Day of Action” earlier that day. Approximately 20 teams of volunteers will be involved in service projects at United Way organizations across the community prior to the luncheon.
“Last year, we had 10 teams involved in the ‘Day of Action’ and this year, we have nearly 20 teams signed up,” said Jaynese Waddell, director of Volunteer Services for United Way. “That’s about 200 volunteers providing help throughout the community that morning.”
She said if this year’s event is similar to last year’s inaugural “Day of Action,” there will be teams that will take a break for lunch, then return to their respective volunteer sites to continue to work. For example, last year Ace Hardware worked at the Blythe Avenue Boys & Girls Club site not only that morning and afternoon, but prior to and after the “Day of Action.”
“Most of the teams represent local industries and businesses, and all that participated last year are returning this year,” Waddell noted. Those companies include Whirlpool, Life Care Centers of America, P&G/Duracell, Cleveland Utilities, Target and Ace Hardware.
Involved in the “Day of Action” for the first time are teams from Georgia Pacific, Belk and Eaton Hydraulics, while Cleveland State Community College and the Rotary Club of Cleveland will also have teams participating for the first time.
“This has become a great event, and we expect even more companies, clubs, schools and other organizations will get involved with volunteer teams in the future,” Waddell said.
Last year, at the kickoff luncheon, those in attendance were inspired by presentations from Lesley Scearce and Joe Smith. The special guest speaker for this year’s kickoff will be announced soon.
The theme to this year’s campaign will be announced as the event nears.
