Suspect charged in iron grate thefts

Over the past few weeks, iron grates or utility covers have been taken from city streets. An investigation led officers to a suspect. Bradley County Sheriff’s deputies arrested the suspect after warrants had been filed.

According to Detective Matt Jenkins of Cleveland Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division, Erick M. Garrett has been charged with theft of the grates.

Jenkins identified Garrett as a suspect through video and fingerprint evidence.

CPD’s crime scene technicians Shane Clark and Jeff Griggs reportedly retrieved evidence and forwarded it to Bradley County criminalist Monica Datz, who verified the prints were those belonging to Garrett, according to Jenkins.

The stolen grates were recovered during the course of the investigation.

According to Jenkins, the grates were valued at over $4,000.

- Bradley County Fire-Rescue officials responded to a home on 31st Street N.E. early Tuesday morning, and found it fully involved in flames.

According to Chief Troy Maney, no one was at home during the early morning fire which was reported just before 3:30 a.m.

Maney said the home measures approximately 2,500 square feet and is valued at $300,000.

Investigation is continuing into the cause of the blaze.

The owners of the home were not identified.

- One person was injured in a motorcycle/passenger vehicle crash this morning in Charleston.

According to Bradley County Sheriff’s Office Traffic investigator David Oliver, emergency personnel from Bradley County Fire-Rescue, Bradley County Emergency Medical Service and BCSO responded to Wacker Drive and Lower River Road just before 7 this morning.

The driver of the motorcycle was headed southbound on Lower River Road when he approached the intersection.

The driver of a white Dodge Durango reportedly pulled from Wacker Drive into the path of the oncoming rider, according to Oliver.

Bradley County EMS paramedics treated the rider for injuries to his legs.

He was transported to SkyRidge Medical Center for treatment. The female driver of the passenger vehicle was not injured.

No charges have been placed, according to Oliver, who is in charge of the crash investigation.
