Living Word Church will celebrate its 28th anniversary Sunday.

The celebration will begin with a special service at 10:30 a.m. at the church, located at 930 25th St., and will conclude with a picnic at 1 p.m. at Fletcher Park, located at 1575 Tennessee Nursery Road N.W..

Pastors Larry and LaVonna Cockerham invite the community to attend.

“We have heard from many friends who are coming from out of town for the anniversary,” Pastor Larry said. “We’re thankful for the many years of blessings, especially our many friends, and we want everyone to feel welcome to join us for this special celebration.”

The service will include pictures and testimonies from Living Word’s history.

Larry and LaVonna Cockerham are the founding pastors of Living Word Church. The Cockerhams, along with their two small children Christy and Evan, moved here from North Carolina in late June 1986.

Living Word’s first service was held in a community center July 6, 1986. Shortly thereafter the church moved the services to the Holiday Inn, where they continued for two years before purchasing their property on Old Tasso Road.

Five years ago, the church purchased the former Pathway Bookstore, located at 930 25th St., where the church is presently located.
