Sam Bennett, 81, a lifelong resident of Cleveland, passed away Thursday evening, July 3, 2014, in a local health care facility.

He was the son of the late Bill and Sybil Jordan Bennett; He was also preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Bennett; and brother, Winston Bennett.

He was a veteran who served in the Army National Guard during the Korean War. He was employed by Johnston Coca-Cola Bottling Company for more than 30 years, and after retiring from Coca-Cola worked for Custom Mechanical Contractors for over 10 years.

He met the love his life, Joyce Bennett, in 1954. They were married with a bang on the 4th of July in 1956. They were still happily married 57 years later at the time of Joyce’s death, Nov. 9, 2013.

He was a charter member of Waterville Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, sang in the choir and even directed traffic after the service. He loved the Lord and shared his faith with others in many different ways, including a bus ministry to reach children throughout Bradley County.

Survivors include his sons: Jeff Bennett and his wife, Stephanie, of Cleveland and Tony Bennett and his wife, Lisa, of Chattanooga; grandchildren: Zoe Bennett, Krista Riad, Bruce Bennett, Elisabeth Bennett and Samantha Bennett; brother, Cecil Bennett and his wife, Laverne, of Franklin, N.C.; sisters: Melba Saffles, Pat Williams and her husband, Glenn, and Lynn Dykes, all of Clevelandl and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friendsin the Cleveland area.

A Remembrance of Life Service will be held today, July 6, 2014, at 3 p.m. from the North Ocoee Street Chapel of Jim Rush Funeral Homes with Pastor Allan Lovelace officiating.

Interment will follow in the Fort Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Waterville Baptist Church Building Fund, 4555 Dalton Pike, Cleveland, TN 37323.

The family will receive friends today from 1 until 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
