On Aug. 2, the award-winning Elvis tribute artist Matt Cordell will return to the Historic Gem Theater to celebrate the 10th year anniversary of performing at the Gem.

The concert is provided by the Merchants and Friends of Etowah and Etowah Parks and Recreation.

Over the last 20 years, Cordell has performed across the USA and out of the country as well as on cruise ships several times a year.

While Cordell’s not touring, he is performing almost daily in Pigeon Forge. He entertains and sings to a full theater each week at Memories, where both young and young at heart clap and swoon to their favorite Elvis tunes.

Cordell has been humming and singing along with Elvis recordings since he was just a toddler. Growing up in the Chattanooga area, Cordell sang with several gospel groups starting out; later he enjoyed occasional performances on stage at the Chattanooga Choo Choo with well-known local artist, James Rogers.

When Rogers went to Dollywood to work, he didn't forget Cordell. Everyone loved Cordell's tribute to Elvis and it didn't take much persuasion for Cordell to realize that was his calling; before he knew it, theaters, organizations, and fans begin requesting and booking Cordell regularly.

After Cordell began performing regularly in Pigeon Forge, Merchants event coordinator Maxine Jones invited him back to Etowah to perform his third show at the Gem Theater.

The Aug. 2 concert will be Cordell's 16th show in the Gem Theater.

"You"ll rarely find an older theater with the quality of sound effects like the Gem left standing," Cordell exclaims.

Cordell's shows have grown the last few years; his mother, Priscilla Cordell, has sung back up at every show and his daughter, Madison, has accompanied his mother the last few years. In fact, the Gem Theater enjoyed some of Madison's first public performances. Her rich voice fills the theater with that voice of nostalgia like Patsy Cline and others.

Cordell's family have been with him each time, including his wife, Tasha and his dad, Ken Cordell. Eddie and Janell always assist with sound and special effects.

It was during one of Cordell's first performances, that he asked Jones and the staff to wear hats he'd found and come to the stage. He had the lights turned up and told the audience to turn around and look at the wonderful historic theater and how it needed some love and restoration. Cordell told the Merchant staff to take off the hats, and turn to the audience and told them, it was time for his last song, but if they would give when the staff passed the hats, he would continue singing. Cordell sang for another hour after the audience donated $1,000 toward the theater restoration.

The Merchants & Friends have donated a portion of their funds after each show every year since.

Since this is going to be a celebration of performing 10 years at the Gem, the Merchants & Friends of Etowah and the Parks & Recreation have some special surprises for Matt.

Fans at the Gem Theater are asked to email photos and film clips taken of Cordell to merchantsandfriendsofetowah@gmail.com. They may be used as part of a PowerPoint film.

Cordell will perform some favorite Elvis gospel songs, as well as favorite movie hits, pop songs, and lots of Elvis all time top 10. If you have a favorite Elvis hit, go online to Matt Cordell does Elvis web site and leave Cordell a message if your favorite.
