CSCC film series to begin July 22

The Committee for Diversity Initiatives at Cleveland State Community College is launching a film series with the first film, “Life of Pi,” being shown on July 22 at 6 p.m. in Room 113 of the George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center.

The “Life of Pi” is based on the best-selling novel by Yann Martell. After a devastating shipwreck, an Indian boy named Pi finds himself stranded on a lifeboat for 227 days with a ferocious Bengal tiger. Together, they face nature's majestic grandeur and fury on an epic journey of discovery.

Other films being shown during the film series include:

- “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” — Thursday, Sept. 18, at 12:45, George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center Theater

- “The Way” — Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 6 p.m., George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center Theater

- “Prince Among Slaves” —Monday, Feb. 16, at 6 p.m. George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center Theater

- “Crash” — Tuesday, April 7, at 12:45 p.m. George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center Theater

All movies will have a discussion that follows by a facilitator. Attendees need to be able to remain for the discussion at the conclusion of the movie.

Cleveland State’s film series is a part of the 2014-2015 Program Series sponsored by the Office of Special Programs and Community Relations.

Last year’s program series brought a variety of musical performers and other artists to campus, including Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Judy Carmichael, award-winning spoken word poet and activist Kane Smego, Indie Jazz and Progressive Hip-Hop performing artists The Beast, Grammy Award Winning Native American flutist Joseph Firecrow and Holocaust survivor Esther Bauer.

Cleveland State reformed the Committee on Diversity Initiatives (CDI) in September, 2007 by merging two former diversity related committees (Diversity Committee and Geier Committee).

The CDI is charged with investigating the college's current diversity population and developing initiatives that will serve to recruit and retain persons from under-represented groups. The committee is also charged with developing and implementing a campus diversity plan. The committee chairman serves as the TBR Diversity Campus contact.
